Light and occasionally funny - 5/10

by Jad Sammour

In general, the film is occasionally funny. You get a few good laughs here and there, but the rest of the jokes are weak and either turn out unfunny, stupid or you may just laugh if that stunt is funny for you. So for a comedy film, it lacks that aspect in many places. The plot has an interesting premise, but the conditions that set it up are stupid. The story is predictable in many points. The plot was full of irrelevant details attempting to give character depth and development, but they felt forced and unnecessary. Dave Bautista gave us a good performance that I liked. I didn’t find Kumail Nanjiani particularly funny, he feels fake at many points and just trying to do his best. The dynamic between Dave and Kumail was ok. I have to mention that there were many continuity errors that I was able to spot, and they were not tiny details: they were in your face and fairly easy to spot. The writer shoved in some good life lessons in there that I found interesting to be presented in a film.

As an experience, the film is a light popcorn comedy and idiotically entertaining. However, it doesn’t present anything new to make it stand. We’ve seen many films like it and it’s getting kind of boring.

It gets 5 stars: but I’m sorry Stu, 5 stars out of 10.
