Verdict: What's worse than a movie with one Will Smith? Yup, a movie with two Will Smiths. Now I'm not implying that he's not a talented actor, because he proved much more than once that he definitely is, but his choice in projects has certainly been going downhill for quite some time now.
"Gemini Man" is further proof that Smith urgently needs a change in agent. The film, directed by Ang Lee, sees the Taiwanese filmmaker leave behind the successes of "Life of Pi" or "Brokeback Mountain" to go back to his dark, "Hulk" days. The action flick sees Smith facing off against a clone of his younger self who looks so bad that you could easily mistake him for a video game character. But that would've been excusable had the film offered some depth or originality in the storytelling department. And to be quite honest, I went in expecting that given the nature of the premise and the director's past filmography. Alas, the shadow of David Benioff, notable writer of masterpieces such "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" or more recently the last season of Game of Thrones, was lurking around, and resulted in the script offering us one of the dullest, most cliché action flicks I've seen in a while. Cheesy dialogue, bad acting, uninteresting and predictable narrative, cringy comedy, weak fight choreography, "Gemini Man" truly had it all, and its 2 hour runtime felt like an eternity to me.
There's really not much to say about what was definitely one of the biggest disappointments of the year. It's a surface level action thriller that sacrifices an interesting concept to give birth to a forgettable dejà-vu of a movie, and that's a shame.
FINAL GRADE: 3/10
