Joker

Movie of the year, by far. - 10/10

Let me start by saying that this is not an easy movie to watch. It’s very heavy, even disturbing at some points, but that’s the genius of it. The movie can make you feel uncomfortable, shock you and genuinely bother you once you really get into it. Also, this is not a superhero movie, it is just based and inspired by DC Comics characters.

Joaquin Phoenix is the perfect cast for this “early” Joker, he portrays the mental collapse of Arthur Fleck into crime flawlessly in an Oscar-worthy performance. His gestures and dancing are hypnotizing, also highlighted by Guðnadóttir’s macabre and fittingly eerie soundtrack. Todd Phillips’ direction is amazing. His representation of Gotham in the 80s makes sense and brings a lot the story: everything from politics to mob riots apply superbly to the Dark Knight’s city. The movie gives us with a realistic representation of the ‘Clown Prince of Crime’ in a universe without his arch nemesis, bringing a fresh, different take on the anti-hero. The couple references to other DC characters or events were planted perfectly and didn’t feel too forced.

This is the movie of the year, you don’t want to miss it.
