An astounding biographical drama, First Man is an immersive journey that highlights one of mankind’s greatest achievements. It’s nothing short of a technical marvel and features extraordinary performances that resonate with viewers.

The movie sets its tone from the very beginning and follows a slow pace that aids in the delivery of its story. The beautiful cinematography and perfect score amplified the whole experience, and the filming techniques used throughout the movie simply place the viewer right along Armstrong. ‘First Man’ tells the story of Neil Armstrong over the course of a decade and through all the important events in his life leading up to the mission to the moon in 1969.

Damien Chazelle is able to create a smooth and gripping narrative that takes its time to deliver its story and I believe that was a great decision because it simply allows one to get more invested into Armstrong’s world, and understand what difficulties he had to face and how they affected him leading up to his grand journey to the moon. What Makes this movie so great is it’s ability to allow one to empathize with its characters. It’s engaging and aimed to show depth rather than just being a space epic. Additionally, it’s a great character study and offers a fresh perspective on this great event in history.

Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy deliver raw and excellent performances that truly make you feel for their characters. Ryan Gosling’s facial expressions alone speak words and project his internal struggles and Claire Foy’s portrayal of his distressed wife was moving and extremely believable. The movie is also beautifully shot, showing some gorgeous scenery both on earth and in space. It will surely be a great contender this award season. Make sure to watch it and let me know what you think.
