The Angry Birds Movie 2

A pleasant surprise - 6.5/10

This sequel to the 2016 hit (which in turn was based on a video game app that made millions of dollars) is likable enough to justify its existence. I’m not a huge fan of the game and I certainly did not rush to see the first film when it came out, but having seen the second movie on opening night, I can safely say that I had a good time with it. It’s so jam-packed with gags there are more than enough to keep younger kids amused. Here, the angry birds and their rivals from pig island must put their differences aside to take down a bigger enemy that threatens to destroy both their islands. The screenplay is sharp and funny, at least for a while, and the voice acting is almost impeccable. But much like similar films of the genre (think “Despicable Me 3” and “Secret Life of Pets”), it can get hectic at times. Still, there’s plenty to enjoy here, and I don’t think kids or their parents will have anything to complain about. In a summer already packed with blockbusters and Disney movies, “The Angry Birds Movie 2” emerges as a pleasant surprise. Take your family to see it.
