Pokémon Detective Pikachu

An enjoyable film with cuddly characters. - 6.5/10

Regardless of everything wrong with this film, I found myself immensely enjoying watching it from start to finish.

Ace detective Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son, Tim, to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry's former Pokémon partner, wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth Detective Pikachu. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to work together, as Tim is the only human who can talk with Pikachu, they join forces to unravel the tangled mystery.

Honestly speaking, the first couple of acts were absolutely all over the place. The pace was super fast, there was zero story direction, and the acting felt kinda off.

But surprisingly, during the last couple of acts, all these flaws (that bugged me) were kind of fixed. And eventually ended with one major boom that was totally worth sitting through every little minor/major flaw. I also really liked the little twist at the end (even though it was totally predictable) but it kinda gave the movie the excitement it so desperately needed.

The CGI could've been a thousand times better for pretty much all of the Pokémon characters but Pikachu on the other hand was absolutely adorable and cuddly. Moreover, Ryan Reynolds did a remarkable job in voicing this electrifying little fur ball, from witty and sarcastic comments to emotional and heartwarming advices, he sure  knew how breath life into this fictional yet so beloved character.

Kathryn Newton and Justice Smith gave good performances but i couldn't shake the feeling that they were miscasted. This, in fact, really bugged me because im a huge fan of Kathryn's acting and im not used in not seeing her in her element.

Nevertheless, despite all these flaws Pokémon Detective Pikachu is still a really good and heartwarming film that is suitable for kids, adults and Pokémon fans. Recommended!
