Pokémon Detective Pikachu

Great visuals and cute Pokémons won’t compensate for a bad script - 3.5/10

Detective Pikachu is a weak film. The problems range from the script to the acting. First off, the story felt a bit outdated and didn’t present anything new. The dialogue was weak in many scenes and the thrown-in exposition didn’t work at all. Many moments weren’t given enough time to be fully explained and flashed out or even reacted to. The film had heart but those moments that should've had a strong effect on the audience weren't well executed or given proper development to effectively work. The final act had a lot of potential but ended up being cringy and cheesy with a terrible villain. The humor barely worked and many jokes fell flat. In addition, the acting was weak and the lead actor couldn’t deliver a convincing performance at many points in the film. The secondary cast also wasn’t that good. The directing was ok. T

Ryan Reynolds was really good and he was one of the few things that I liked. The Pokémon designs were well-done and cute. The visual effects were good but sometimes too cartoony and I loved the cinematography.

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu was a disappointment and a huge missed opportunity to create something more unique… or maybe leave Pokémon out of the cinematic format and stick to the anime where it truly belongs.

Pika Pika.
