Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Spectacular visual effects and first rate Kajiu action make "King of the Monsters" worth seeing on the biggest screen possible. - 7/10

The sequel to the 2014 movie is tons of fun. If I sound surprised, then perhaps I am. I didn’t have any particular expectations this time around, having been burned before. What’s more, I wasn’t sure how all these different monsters would fit in one movie. But this film adds excitement and new energy to a storyline that we’re all familiar with. That, along with some spectacular visual effects, make “Godzilla II” worth seeing on the biggest screen possible. Yes, it’s campy. Yes, it has monsters battling it out and destroying everything in their path. And yet, the movie rarely fails to entertain. That will happen, I guess, when you learn from the mistakes of your first film and deliver a much more entertaining follow-up (the 2014 movie wasn’t bad by any means, but it left me wanting more). Vera Farmiga leads a group of scientists who are about to face their deadliest threat yet: giant-sized monsters who would stop at nothing to destroy the earth. If your biggest wish was to see Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan and the three-headed King Ghidorah together in one movie, then this movie was tailor-made for you. And somehow, it does work, despite a few bumps along the way. When was the last time a summer blockbuster delivered on its promise? “King of the Monster” does just that. It’s big, it’s cheesy, and it’s a lot of fun.
