Yomeddine - يوم الدين

A brutal but beautiful piece of art - 9/10

Egypt’s Submission to the 91st Academy Awards deserved a nomination... Yomeddine is one of the most powerful films of 2018. Although it had a tough/depressing story, the director chose to present it without any melodramatic moment. The connection with the main actors was built really fast, I felt sympathy from the very first moment. “Yomeddine” knew how to balance funny moments and emotional scenes. The script is beautifully written, without spoon-feeding the messages or turning any scene into a poetic dialogue (which happens frequently in similar movies). The movie’s cinematography was sublime, beautiful shots and a great choice of colors especially during the night scenes. The original score (by Omar Fadel) added a big value to every single scene, it’s definitely one of the movie’s strongest elements. Director Abu Bakr Shawky‘s choice to cast people from the Colony was on point. The actors weren’t performing, they were simply reliving previous situations. Yomeddine is emotional, funny, and most importantly.... REAL. Highly Recommended.
