“What did I just watch?” is the question I kept asking myself after leaving the theater. “The Beach Bum” is a strange and confusing movie, people might actually enjoy watching it because of the weird tone and the unusual characters. I’m aware that it has a specific audience, but this doesn’t make it flawless. The story was inconsistent, many unenessary scenes, and most importantly no emotions. I couldn’t feel any sympathy even during the dramatic moments when I was supposed to care. The way these charactes were behaving was distracting, as a result I couldn’t build a connection with any of them. The movie has a good message to deliver and I have to admit that Matthew McConaughey was amazing, I really enjoyed his performance and some scenes were funny, but this wasn’t enough. I know that we’re not supposed to overanalyze such movies, but again this doesn’t eliminate the fact that many flaws were present. You can make a “feel good” movie with a better execution and a solid story. I didn’t hate “The Beach Bum”, but I felt emotionless the whole time, I’m pretty sure many people will like it.
