Captain Marvel
Funny and vibrant. Marvel fans will enjoy every minute of it. - 7.5/10

By now, you probably know that “Captain Marvel” will play a major role in the upcoming “Avengers: Endgame”. So it’s only natural that Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers gets a standalone film at this stage in the Marvel cinematic universe. And you couldn’t ask for a better movie to make your mouth water before the highly anticipated final showdown with Thanos. Larson owns the role from the word go, and she is surrounded by a first-rate cast that includes Jude Law, Annette Bening and Samuel L. Jackson in his funniest outing as S.H.I.E.L.D’s Nick Fury (seriously, I can’t remember the last time Fury made me laugh so much). I wouldn’t call the story original, but it’s still an exciting one, with endless references to 90’s pop culture and enough humor for two movies. I had a blast watching it. There’s a lot to cover here, and even though this is Marvel’s 21st movie since 2008’s “Iron Man”, co-directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck still make it feel fresh and vibrant. So yes, we’re in the mid-90’s this time around (I could immediately tell this was 1995 from the “Babe” poster at Blockbuster video), way before Iron Man and the rest of the Avengers made their debut onscreen. But before her trip to earth, we learn that Carol lived on another planet and was trained by her mentor Yon-Rogg (Law) in order to join his elite team to exterminate their shape-shifting enemies known as the Skrulls. Things get more interesting when Carol ends up on planet earth and meets Fury and the rest of the S.H.I.E.L.D crew. And so Carol’s journey begins, and the less you read about it the more you will enjoy the many surprises in store. Suffices to say that the action scenes are skillfully staged and exciting to watch. And much like Marvel’s latest installments, we never lose sight of the emotional stakes in every scene. That’s what makes “Captain Marvel” so good and so relevant. It has a personality all its own, and Marvel fans will love every minute of it. I know I did.
