Beautiful Boy

Somewhere between disastrous and inspiring. - 6/10

Somewhere between disastrous and inspiring is a movie titled Beautiful Boy.

Based on the best selling pair of memoirs from father and son David and Nic Sheff, Beautiful Boy chronicles the heartbreaking and inspiring experience of survival, relapse and recovery in a family coping with addiction over many years.

Touching, emotional and realistic, Beautiful Boy masterfully captured the essence of a worldwide disease that is consuming the life of many young adults/individuals : drug addiction. Shooting from several point of views, director Felix Von Groeningen made sure to add/highlight every single detail/process in the life of an addict and his surroundings in addition to the consequences on both sides.

To continue, this movie, even though its story and genre is being used alot this year, still created an atmosphere where most viewers, myself including, will directly enter  into an emotional vortex that is bound to wreck your nervous system.

But this movie is only this good because of its stellar duo leads, Steve Carell and Timothee Chalamet. Their performances were simply breathtaking and sincere. They both managed to delve deep into their characters to a point where they were utterly convincing. No wonder why Timothee was nominated for best supporting actor at the Golden Globe Awards for his role in this movie.

But as most movies, Beautiful Boy has its share of flaws starting from the weak and sometimes confusing script. It was nowhere near good, it only downgraded this whole film and made my experience a lot less enjoyable.

To continue, i would've loved to see more of Moura Tierney's character. Her character didn't have this deep and intense impact i was looking for. In general, there isn't a feminine/woman's point of view/side. Van Groeningen could've expanded the story even further with this character. Let a woman tell her side of the story, her perspective on this matter. Too bad!

To conclude, Beautiful Boy is definitely a movie not to miss if you decide to overlook all its flaws.

Recommended.
