Aquaman

Funny, fast paced and a lot of fun! - 7.5/10

It oozes old-fashioned entertainment. That’s “Aquaman” in a nutshell, DC’s latest superhero to finally get his own standalone film. But who would have thought that after the super serious “Batman V Superman” and “Justice League”, “Aquaman” would be their funniest entry in the series? What’s more, Jason Momoa is fully up to the task. This sets the stage for a fast-paced adventure that has the fingerprints of its director, James Wan, all over it. In telling the origin story of Arthur Curry (Momoa), the half-human and half-Atlantean, Wan gives us everything you would want from a superhero film: pulse-pounding action scenes and a dose of humor to match them. It also has a relaxed feel, something that was missing from DC’s previous entries. That’s not to say that the movie doesn’t have a serious tone. In fact, Aquaman has to battle not one, but two villains here. But Wan and his collaborators are confident enough to make this adventure as funny as possible. And it works. Sure, with so many things going on, you’re bound to lose focus at times. And if I had to nitpick, I’d say that the music feels off, especially in key moments. No matter. “Aquaman” distances itself from other films in the DC universe by having a personality of its own. It’s not a perfect film by any means, but it’s constantly entertaining and a visual treat from start to finish. I suspect DC fans (and superhero aficionado in general) would enjoy every minute of it. Bring on the sequel!
