Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

The best animated feature of the year and one of the best Spider-Man films ever made - 9/10

  • Animation: 10/10
Why? Ever wondered what it would feel like to watch a comic book instead of reading it? Probably not, but you're going to experience it either way. And let me tell you, it's as glorious as it sounds, if not more. Everything, from the gorgeous character design to the riveting action set pieces, was flawlessly executed in a way I thought could only be done on paper. "Into the Spider-Verse" is a movie every comic book fan will instantly fall in love with, and proves that taking risks in the superhero genre can be extremely rewarding when done right.
  • Performances: 8/10
Why? Not one single bad performance on the horizon. Even though I never felt that the actors who lent their voices to the characters truly embodied them to the point where I couldn't picture anyone else voicing them, I have to admit that I could feel their chemistry through their rich exchanges and comedic timing.
  • Screenplay: 8/10
Why? "Into the Spider-Verse" is my favorite animated feature of the year and one of the best Spider-Man movies ever made not only for its incredible animation, but also for its surprisingly effective humor and self-awareness. It's easily one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long while and one I'll certainly be watching a second time on the big screen. Having said that, I do have to mention that I had a couple of minor issues with it. Issues that were overshadowed by the insane animation but that I do feel like I have to bring up. First of all, I thought that the film didn't really balance well the (many) characters, leaving some of them, including the main villain, lacking a bit of development. I also found the second half of the movie to be a little less risky than its first, which led to some generic and cliché moments we've seen a thousand times before. These issues aside, I think it's pretty safe to say that Miles Morales' first outing as Spider-Man was a resounding success that will leave children and adults alike asking for more.
  • Editing: 10/10
Why? Absolutely brilliant in every way. Not only did the editing work give life and energy to a movie that revolves around a character known for having these two traits, but it also contributed in giving it the comic book feel I was talking about earlier. The transitions used reminded me of the way I jump from panel to panel while reading an issue of Spider-Man, and it couldn't have been done in a better way.
  • Score/Soundtrack: 8/10
Why? Mainly composed of hip-hop songs written by famous artists such as Post Malone or Nicki Minaj, which makes total sense since that's exactly what Miles, the main character, would listen to.

FINAL GRADE: 9/10
