Green Book

A humorous and an insightful crowd-pleaser - 8/10

Green Book, Golden Globes 2019 best picture nominee, is without a doubt a humorous and an insightful crowd-pleaser.

A working class Italian-American bouncer becomes the driver of an African-American classical pianist on a tour of venues through the 1960s American South.

Green Book, an experience worth remembering due to Mahershela Ali and Viggo Mortensen's intense yet emotional performances. Perfectly chosen, rarely have i seen two main leads with such chemistry and charisma ; portraying two roles that they seem to embody impeccably. No one could've played these roles like these actors did.

Dumb and Dumber director, Philip Farrelly's pacing was on point, not too fast nor too slow and as a result, the 130 minutes felt way less and did not include any single moment of boredom.

One of this film's best attributes is that its immensely multilayered : culture, racism, stereotypes, race, respect and acceptance. You name it. It tackled all these issues and much more so gracefully and in a way that seemed complicated yet simple. Down to earth as it is, this film managed to stay away from being too fake or overly preachy.

Provoking? Yes, Green Book is Provoking. Even though you're not directly affected by its subject, you'll leave the theater with a sense of guilt and shame. And that just shows the intensity of such movie/story, especially nowadays.

To add, one of the many good things about Green Book is that it contained just the right amount of humor and comedy in every scene. In addition, the camera movements and the angles added value to the already amazing story.

At the end of the day, Green Book is an inspiring true story adaptation that we all should watch now rather than later.

Highly recommend it.
