It’s not the message you’re trying to send.... it’s the way the audience receive it. “Ben is Back” had good intentions, it was trying to show us addiction and struggle from a different perspective, but unfortunately the way they decided to present it confused me. During the first act, you feel like this movie is going nowhere, so I kept waiting for the event that will turn this story upside down and create a sense of urgency.... I waited till the end and nothing major happened. I had no interest in the story, like nothing really matters. Some actions were illogical, unexplained or just cold. On the other hand, Julia Robert’s performance was strong in many scenes, although the script didn’t help her, same thing goes for Lucas Hedges. I don’t usually enjoy hand-held cameras, but it was necessary in this film, and some shots were really good. You might enjoy “Ben is Back” if you’re a fan of Dark Drama.
